Their world beyond the walls of Tihar

New Delhi, January 5

FIVE YEAR  old Pinky’s mother is lodged in the Tihar Jail. She does not know how long her mother will stay there but misses her a little less than she would earlier.

Her father works at a tea stall in the walled city and she spends her day at school. Pinky dreams of becoming a teacher some day.

She is one of the many children that the India Vision Foundation has taken into its fold. The organization is dedicated to the cause od education and rehabilitation of the children of Tihar Jail inmates.

The foundation celebrated its annual day today at the Talkatora Garden where the children presented an array of programmes ranging from recitation and drama to dance. “Our thrust is on educating these children and give them a better future with the aim to prevent them from falling prey to crime,” said Magsaysay award winner Kiran Bedi, who is also a trustee at the foundation.

India Vision Foundation began with the education and rehabilitation of these children in its Crime Home Children project at New Delhi and Mumbai. They have about 150 children under its care. Most of these children have stayed behind bars with their mothers.
